I have a 2003 VW Jetta TDI. I also own a 99.5 and two 2002. They all use the ALH engine. I work on other's cars, and most of them are ALH engines. My four cars have over 1.5 million miles on them. I use T6 5w40 oil, and have used it in all my cars since they were new. I change at the 10k mile point, with a new filter each time.

If VW recommends oil change at an interval of 10,000 miles, change oil between the interval 9999.9 and 10,001, unless you want to lighten your pocket at any interval less than this. Since you get free 3 oil changes, take advantage of those.
This should apply to any ~2009 or newer VW with a 6 speed manual transmission, including but not limited to: the 2010-2014 Golf TDI, Jetta TDI, Passat TDI, GTI, Beetle, and several others. These transmissions have what VW calls a "lifetime" fluid, so you will not find any scheduled maintenance for these fluids in your book.
